TYPES OF ROSES

There are an incredible variety of roses and they are too numerous, but a few of most common types are listed here. Please consult your nearest garden center for advice on whether your choice is fitting to your garden’s abilities and local weather and soil conditions.

Each type of rose has its own advantages and disadvantages. Choose the right type of rose that suits you, your garden and your needs. After you decide on the type of roses that you would like to plant in your garden. You will also want to know the type of rose that best fit your ideas and your needs.

Landscape roses: These roses are great for the beginner. They are disease resistant, and require less maintenance than say hybrid teas and add color and glamour to your garden.

Climbing Roses: These are good to cover walls or to grow on trellises and or buildings. They grow upward in vines and add beauty to drab walls and gardens. Some of them are hybrid teas, wichuraine, and large flowered climbers.

Shrub Roses: These are also good for beginners and novices. Shrub roses like the beautiful rugosa are both long blooming, and disease resistant. Even when they are not in bloom because the foliage is so pretty.

Old Garden Roses: Better to avoid these roses if you suffer from severe allergies to strong fragrances because they have a strong fragrant odor. However, they are disease resistant and continue to bloom for months at a time.

The Modern Rose: These are very special roses because they are the result of cross breeding the hybrid tea with the polyanthus. Also known as Floribunda they are a beautiful combination of the best those two flowers have to offer. Long blooming, fragrant, and great for cutting these flowers are used in floral arrangements.

Miniature Roses: Miniature roses have all of the fragrance and beauty of a regular rose, but they have smaller blooms. These roses are great for indoor planting.

Tips to grow your roses:

  1. The first 3-4 weeks after planting your roses, you should water them often. Usually this is when the top 2 inches of soil is dry. Roses need a lot of moisture and food to remain healthy.
  2. Four weeks after planting, you should start soaking the bed every 2 weeks or so. You should do this in the morning for the best results.
  3. Begin fertilization approximately 3 months after planting. Use 3-6 inches of mulch to control the moisture, temperature, and to stops weeds from coming up. Mulch also helps to lock in the vital nutrients your roses need in order to remain healthy.
  4. Planting in the Spring is the best.
  5. Plant your roses in a well-aerated area and in a hole big enough for the roots to grow with freedom.
