What To Do When Windows Won’t Start

Posted on September 16th, 2006. About Computers.

WHEN WINDOWS WON’T BOOT
by Otis F. Cooper

When Windows fails to boot it is normally caused
by you installing a program or device and it has
caused a conflict with one or more other programs.
This will no doubt give you plenty of heartache if
you’re not certain which program caused Windows
to not boot up.

If you recently installed a program or application
and know where it was installed, you may be in
much better shape as for as correcting the error.
Here are common ways to correct the problem
of your computer not completely booting up or
not booting up at all.

If your computer will not boot-up at all, hopefully
you have made a good emergency boot disk.
You can always make a windows startup disk by
creating one from another computer running
Windows 98 or Me.Perform the following if your
computer……..

Won’t Boot-Up At All

FIRST……Put your boot floppy disk in the floppy
drive and turn on the PC.On some computers,
you may have to access the bios and select the
Boot priority to your A: drive.Save any changes
and select “Start Computer without CDROM
support” and press Enter.Once you are at the
A> prompt,type dir c: and press enter.

If your programs and other files are present, try
restoring your system Registry by following the
steps below. This may repair Windows, the Config.
Sys and autoexec.bat files to where the PC may
boot up normally. When the files are present, its
a good indication of a good hard drive.

SECOND……To correct the problem of your computer
not booting up,type in “fdisk /mbr” and press Enter
to restore your master boot record.Type “Scandisk C:”
to check the hard drive for errors that have occurred.
You can also type “Sys C:” to hopefully restore files
needed to boot up your computer.

THIRD……If the above procedures fail to repair
your computer, you can repeat the first part of step
one above and select “Start Computer With CDROM
Support” re-install Windows.

Making A Windows XP Bootable Floppy
Windows XP users should create a boot disk now by
placing a formatted blank diskette in the A: drive, open
Windows Explorer to the C:,select Tools,Folder Options
,show Hidden files and and folders, then View Tab.

Now you uncheck “Hide Protected Operating System
Files (recommended). You will see a warning and click
Yes and click OK.Copy the files ntldr,ntdetect.com and
boot.ini onto the disk.Remove the disk and label it the
Windows XP Boot Disk.

After making your boot disk, recheck “Hide protected
operating system files and folders (recommended)” in
the Folder Options dialog box.

To use the disk when Windows XP won’t boot, place
the disk in the drive, and unto re-booting,the computer,
Windows simply bypass the basic boot files on the hard
drive and continue to boot up.

If The PC Won’t Boot Pass Windows

FIRST……If your Operating System is Windows
Millennium, turn on the computer and immediately
press and hold down the CTRL key.Once the
startup options appear, release the CTRL key.

Select Safe Mode and press Enter. You are now
in Windows limited version. If you know what
caused your computer not to boot, you can now
either change or delete that program.

SECOND….Repair your Registry by selecting
Start,Run and typing “scanregw /fix” and press
enter. This will fix any damage done to the Registry.

You can also restore your registry which replaces
your current registry with an earlier copy that was
backed up by your computer.Click on Start,Run
and type “scanregw /restore” and press Enter.

To repair your Windows 98 Registry, hold down
the CTRL key as you start the PC and select
“Command Prompt Only”.Type “scanreg /fix” and
press Enter and “scanreg/restore” to restore a
previousely saved copy of the Registry.

If you have Windows XP,press F8 after rebooting
the PC should Windows freeze while booting up.
You can select “Last Known Good Configuration”
after rebooting to allow the computer to boot the
last backed up files. And you can choose “Safe
Mode” to remove any files you know caused the
operating system to hang up.

Be prepared when your operating fails to boot.
It would be a great idea to go over this article
a few times and print it.Make yourself s notebook
and place this and all related articles there.

If your computer fails to boot or begins to become
unstable, you can refer to these articles to make
corrections that are needed.Learn these steps
from your television set with the PC Super Pack.

Be sure to note any changes you make to your
Registry and if you’re not sure, its best to find
a friend that’s pc savvy first.Above all,be certain
you back up your registry before making
any changes and know how to restore as well.

Indian Biotech Industry Successful IT cousin

Posted on September 15th, 2006. About Computers.

Closely following information technology, the next success in India is biotechnology. As per Mckinsey by 2020, only two main biotechnology companies will comprise a market capitalization, which will be the same as the collective market capitalization of all of the IT companies at present.

This rapid growth in biotechnology is working as an incentive to bio-industry executives, research scientists, and venture capitalists to come together to put forth ideas that would triple the market for bio-products. The latest inclination is towards the application of IT to biotechnology, transgenic crops, plant genomes, crop protection, food security, and induced resistance to plant diseases. With this in the background a number of biotechnology researchers want to become entrepreneurs.

The world currently spends about US $7 billion on outsourced biotech R&D. Further this is expected to grow by 30% every year for the next 5 years. Also there is a growing increase in the global trend to outsource R&D to areas of lower-cost capabilities in biotechnology. CROs can be compared with software development in the IT sector in terms of the formers activity and they have a potential to function as export oriented units.

Bio-informatics can prosper relatively easily through the development of software to handle biological data. Biotechnology is the most updated division of science, which is believed to have immense potential in agriculture and environment.

In their market research report, “Indian Biotechnology Market Outlook (2006)” RNCOS’ analysts reveal that the present biotech workforce employed in India is 10,000 and this is expected to double in 2006. Of this total workforce 50% will be in research, 35%in the technical and services sector, and 15% in management.

The report gives a clear picture of the future Indian biotech market, the initiatives and policies of central and state governments covering all segments of the market. Having made an intensive SWOT analysis the report analyzes the sector in terms of size, demand, and foreign and domestic markets for 2005 while making forecasts till 2010.

Finally the report lists company profiles of 20 major companies in the biotech industry including Shantha Biotechnics, Biocon, Bharat Biotech, Wockhardt, Serum Institute of India, Zydus Cadila, and Aventis Pharma.

Podcasting: How to Make a Video Podcast

Posted on September 14th, 2006. About Computers.

Podcasting: How to Make a Video Podcast

Although Apple had nothing to do with the podcasting technology, the iPod and podcasting quickly became linked. With the advent of the iPod Video, podcasting entered a whole new level. Now, more than the usual audio broadcasts, aspiring film makers can also share their work with the world.

So how do you go about making your own video podcast? To make it easier on you, use a digital video camera. If you have an analog video camera, it is still possible to convert the footage to digital format but it adds another step to the process. So assuming you have a digital video camera, what do you do?

First, take great footage. Of course, making a film is not simply shooting. Create a concept and make it good. When you have finalized your ideas, it is time to shoot. When taking your shots, bear in mind your target media – the iPod. The small screen will not be able to display too many details so it is a good idea to get close when shooting. Do not use the wide-screen mode but use the standard mode instead. Optimize bandwidth and battery power by shooting several short segments instead of one full-length film. Edit! Small screen viewing will not show text clearly unless they are large enough. Also bear in mind that fast motion and high contrast might not show very clearly on the small screen.

Now that you have your video, it’s time to compress it. This needs to be done so that the video will be optimized for web and iPod viewing. There are different ways you can do this. If you have a MAC, it’s no big deal. You can compress and export your video using iMovie HD6 simply by clicking the following: FILE&gtExport&gtiPod&gtShare. It’s as easy as that – the software automatically converts the file and shares it on iTunes. For PC users, you can also use QuickTime Pro, version 7.0.3 or higher. Again, simply click Export &gt Using Quick Time Conversion. The resulting *.m4v file is the one you will upload to your web server. Other options are Sorenson Squeeze and Spasm Software’s Podner.

Describe or tag your movie. This is very important as all the information you supply will be the basis of searching later on. This is how your movie can be found and singled out, out of all the video podcasts out there. If you’re using the latest iMovie version, all you need to do is drag the file onto iTunes and click the Info Tab. Then enter the necessary information. You can also change the filename. For PC users, create an XML document. You can find a sample XML file at http://playlistmag.com/features/200…dcast/index.php. Just change the details to suit your movie. When this is done, all you need to do it upload your file to your web server.

Now what? Distribute! Let people know that your video podcast exists. You can do this in a variety of ways. To reach as many people as possible, submit your podcast to iTunes. You can also provide a URL for your podcast by including it in your blog. First create an RSS feed (www.feedburner.com is a good one) so that you can attach your video to your blog. Then create an entry in your blog and then place a link to your video. Of course, if you really want people to notice your work, you have to promote it. Go to websites such as www.podcastalley.com. Now wait for the world to discover the budding film maker in you.

Podcastblaster.com supplies podcasting software and provides information all about
podcasting including podcasting for profit.

Are you Blogging Effectively?

Posted on September 13th, 2006. About Computers.

Perhaps “blogging” isn’t such a graceful word. For me, personally, it sounds like a worded drudgery the way cereals can be soggy, skies can be foggy, and the way minds can be groggy. But for now, it’s too late to rename this shortened word for web-logging. Widespread blogging is nevertheless one of the most engaging Internet developments of the past few years. As a medium it gives rise to many new and worthy voices and plays a new and vital force in shaping opinions, political realities, trends, and even our language.

I believe that a blog is simply a tool to use for someone who’s got something to say. Let me be clear in saying that a blog is a poor choice for someone who needs a megaphone to scream out to cyberspace in order to elicit a meaningful response from Internet users. If you want attention and want it now and expect blogging to bring it to you, then this will surely be a disappointment. However, if you like to write and engage others on subjects of which you have some command or experience, then it’s a wonderful application with which you can interact with people who share similar interests as you. The hype is well founded.

Anyway, here’s a list of blogging tips…

1.) Be topical.
Cohesiveness in message is not optional. Readers may or may not be interested in your topic, but if your message is haphazard that few will bother remembering to return to your blog because it essentially would offer nothing to remember. This doesn’t mean blogs can’t jump from subject to subject. For instance, a blog with a humorous focus has all the leeway in the world for subject matter, but it would be foolish for such a blog to turn the humor on and off. In such an example, the aspect of humor would be content’s glue, the strength of the blog. The beauty of staying on point and on topic is that eventually, due to the nature of the Internet, you will find those interested solely in your topic. (as opposed to online diaries. There are millions of them on the internet, few have any readers. Email me with examples if I’m wrong and I’ll be able to show you why you’re showing me a blog and not a diary.)

2.) Refresh your content
Create a schedule and stick to it. Realizing that blogging requires time and effort, don’t create unrealistic expectations and be unable to deliver. An occasional lapse or holiday is generally understood but readers returning to find stale, out-dated content are going to find another blog with similar content. New blogs and RSS feeds are popping up on a daily basis. If you have worked hard to develop an audience and a community you don’t want to lose them due to lack of communication.

And remember, what’s old is not new and, for blogs, thusly not interesting. 2006 isn’t the time to rail against Enron or Vanilla Ice. Insight doesn’t matter much to yesterday’s news.

3.) Clear Language Counts.
Blessed is the blog with a clear line of logic. Write without inside jokes, clique-y catchphrases or ambiguous logic. First time readers need to be close to your message. They are more likely to return to blogs that strike them positively. If the first read is confusing there will not be a second read.

4.) Feed the Spiders.
Search engines take notice of active blogs and blog search engines are especially sensitive to activity. If nothing else, search engines are smarter today than they were yesterday and are only getting smarter. In constantly improving they are seeking to aggregate quality; quality blogs are updated several times a week, if not daily, as opposed to once or twice a month. I don’t mean to scare you but a big spider is watching, so dance for them.

5.) RSS.
Think of RSS like a magic to blogging world, because that’s the effect it’s had. RSS feeds are a way to exponentially sound your voice to the interested. These feeds are a great means to increase the distribution and readership of your original content.

6.) Spell check.
Hey man, use the spell-check. I do – if I didn’t you probably wouldn’t have made it to #6. It only takes a minute and can save you from looking like a hack.

Your weblog audiences will be small at first. And, frankly, that’s the way it should be. Who are you to think that half the internet will flock to you after three or four posts of your blog, anyway?

If you tough it out while maintaining quality, readership will materialize. You will link to good, relevant blogs and, in turn, they will to you. While your voice may be unique, your niche likely isn’t and if your content is emitted smartly to the Internet those relevant readers will respond through readership and interaction. That I guarantee.

How To Spot Shill Bidding On Ebay

Posted on September 12th, 2006. About Computers.

How To Spot Shill Bidding On Ebay

If you are a user of eBay then the chances are, that you have already come across the term “shill bidding”. Shill bidding, is bidding that is used to artificially inflate the price of a certain item. Shill bidding usually takes place when the seller of an item wishes to increase the price, or generate interest in the item. The seller would usually get a friend or family member to bid on the item in question so that it looks like the item is more popular than it actually is, sometimes the seller may also use a second eBay account to increase the price of the item.

Shill bidding is prohibited by eBay and rightfully so. In my time I have been the victim of a shill bidding eBay scam. I was bidding on a digital camera and was surprised to see the price increase dramatically every time I made a bid, each bid that I made was followed by a new bid from an eBay user without any feedback. I thought this was very strange so I contacted eBay, they confirmed to me that the seller was using a second account to increase the price of the item, in the hopes that I would keep bidding and be made to pay a higher price. The listing was pulled by eBay and the seller had both of their accounts suspended. I was lucky but unfortunately many others are not so fortunate.

Shill bidding is a huge problem on eBay and you may have already been a victim of this scam without even realising it! Hopefully after reading this guide you will be able to spot if a shill bidder is bidding on one of your auctions.

The first step to take if you feel you have been a victim of shill bidding is to look at the “Bidders List” for the item that you are bidding on. Usually an account that is used for shill bidding will have very little, if any feedback. The account could even have been created within the last 30 days with the sole intention of shill bidding for the seller, you can see if the member is new as they will have a small orange icon next to their user ID.

You should also do some research into the sellers other sales. Look at the sellers other sales via their feedback profile and see if the shill bidder was bidding on those items as well. If the shill bidder was bidding then the chances are that the seller is using a second account, or the account of a friend to shill bid.

Finally, another favoured method to spot a shill bidder is to look at how much the bids are increasing by. Usually a shill bidder will only place a “Nibbler” bid, this is a bid that is only slightly higher than your bid but then puts the impetuous on you to bid on the item again. The shill bidder will keep on bidding until you stop, they will then retract their final bid leaving you to pay for the item at a higher price than you should have paid!

If you believe that you have been a victim of a shill bidding scam or think that an eBay member may be shill bidding then you need to contact eBay. You can contact eBay using the contain form on their site, if eBay finds that the user has indeed been shill bidding then the all of the accounts associated with the shill bidder will be suspended.

Dan Thompson is a successful eBay Power seller and has recently opened a new website that allows members of the public to report eBay scams. The website also contains a popular open forum where you can ask Dan any questions that you may have - www.auction-arses.com
