Tattoo Art Tips : How to Take Care of a New Tattoo

Posted on February 28th, 2006. About Sports.

If you finally decide to get a tattoo you will go to a recommended tattoo artist. He will probably show you some designs to pick from. If you don’t like any of them you can ask him to do a custom one. Be careful when choosing the design of your new tattoo because you will live with it all your life. anyway, after getting a tattoo done you should know some aftercare tips that cannot be ignored.

If you go to a good tattoo shop than the tattooist will clean and apply antiseptic ointment to the tattoo while creating it. This is the healthiest way to make a tattoo.

After the job is finished the artist will clean it and use another coat of ointment. Then will apply a piece of cellophane or soft tissue.

After all that is done the tattooist will explain you how to take care of your new tattoo or he will give you a sheet with detailed instructions. in case none of this happens i will explain you in the rest of this article what you should do.

1. First of all, when you get home, don’t jump immediately in the shower. My advice is to keep it dry(but also clean). Be sure to wash your hands very well before touching the new tattoo. This way you won’t have any complications or infections.

2. Next, go to the first drug store you find and buy a tube of A&D Ointment. Apply it on the tattoo the first four too six days. After it gets dry remove the old application with a piece of soft cloth and then apply another one. Be very careful not to rub too hard the new tattoo. Do not use soap in the first few day, it’s not recommended.

3. After few days you can stop using the A&D Ointment. Try to use some kind unscented, unmedicated body lotion, as some scents may irritate the still-tender skin of your tattoo.

4. After you have applied the body lotion for around week you can stop doing that. A problem is that when the tattoo heals it will scab in some portions. When you will try to pick this cabs be very careful not to damage your tattoo design. So the best for you and your tattoo is to let it heal alone.

So after you get a new tattoo and fallow this after car instructions you can be sure that you won’t have any problems. I use this methods my self and i can sincerly recommend it.

What to look for in a Guitar Humidifier

Posted on February 27th, 2006. About Sports.

Dry weather or environments can cause irreparable damage to acoustic guitars, in the form of fine cracks in the wood.

One way to supply additional humidity to your guitar is through a device known as a guitar humidifier. These devices are designed to release humidity inside the guitar through the sound-hole. Sound-hole humidifiers all utilize some type of water reservoir with an absorbent medium such as a sponge, water absorbent floral foam or absorbent polymer. The medium is then surrounded by some type of cover which holds the water absorbent medium in place and restricts the flow of water evaporation from the medium. To get inside your guitar, they slip between your guitar strings and are held in place there. Depending upon the brand of humidifier you purchase, it may or may not touch the wood inside your guitar. Dampit is designed to lie inside your guitar, while Planet Waves and Oasis are completely suspended from the strings.

Water holding capacity and the restrictiveness of the outer cover are the greatest factors in determining how often you will need to refill the device. Needless to say, you can’t stick a quart container of water inside your guitar, but there are several humidifiers that will hold an ounce (30 cc’s) or more such as Oasis or Planet Waves. If your guitar needs several cc’s per day of water vapor, a humidifier that holds only 5-10 cc’s will need to be refilled every few days.

Planet Waves and Dampit utilize holes in the outside membrane to release water vapor. Oasis uses a fabric which allows the water vapor, but not the water, to pass through the material to keep your guitar humidified. One downside to evaporation holes is the risk of water leakage. Very careful handling can minimize, but not eliminate this risk. Oasis is a water-tight, sealed unit which eliminates the risk of water leakage.

When to refill your humidifier is one of the great mysteries which have been solved by Oasis. Since Oasis is a flexible sealed container, is shrinks as the water inside of it evaporates through the fabric. When Oasis begins to look like a prune, you need to refill it.

All of the sound-hole humidifiers work. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. As with any new product you purchase, please read the directions carefully before use.

David Hepple is the inventor of the Oasis Guitar Humidifier. Since the age of 13, he has played either a nylon stringed classical or flat top steel stringed guitar. For the past 14 years, he has been an active volunteer with the Baltimore Classical Guitar Society, serving as President from 1999 to 2003 and now as treasurer. Prior to being President, he booked the organization’s concert series.

History of Sports Memorabilia

Posted on February 25th, 2006. About Sports.

STORY OF SPORTS MEMORABILIA

The other day I was cataloguing three boxes of baseball cards for a friend of mine and I began to think about how this entire card collecting and sports memorabilia phenomenon began. If you are a closet fan (as I am) of shows on television that travel from city to city checking out and pricing antiques for the general public, you’d be aware of the fact that often sports memorabilia is brought to the shows for assessment. So this tells me that a lot of people out there have sports memorabilia that they consider to be antiques, so collecting of sports memorabilia has been around for a long time.

WHEN DID SPORTS MEMORABILIA COLLECTING BEGIN?

If it’s true that nothing says “USA” like baseball does, then it’s natural that sports memorabilia collecting in this country began with a connection to the American pastime of baseball. Tobacco Companies introduced baseball cards to Americans in the late 1800’s in an attempt to sell their products. When I was younger I had always thought that the Bubble Gum Companies such as Topps first introduced baseball cards, but bubble gum baseball cards were really a product of the fifties and sixties.

These days Tobacco Companies are finding it next to impossible to have their names advertised any where near sports and sporting events, but in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, cigarette and cigar smoking was the norm. The Goodwin Company of New York put out the first real numbered collection of baseball cards in the 1870’s. The American Tobacco Company produced the most famous and therefore, today, the most valuable baseball card, the Honus Wagner T206 in 1909. It has been estimated that only around fifty of these cards exist today. Wagner was said to be not happy having his name connected to tobacco sales and production of his card was therefore limited. In the early 1900’s baseball card collecting began in earnest and spawned the hobby and business of sports memorabilia collecting, as we know it today.

Tobacco Companies continued to produce baseball cards through to the 1920’s and in the 1930’s Bubble Gum Companies began putting collection cards in their packages in an attempt to increase sales of their product. These sales were halted during the Second World War and in the 1950’s production began again with the first color photograph cards being offered. Baseball card production continues to this day in a highly competitive business although no longer are card sales inter-connected to sales of gum.

IT’S NOT JUST A HOBBY

Of course, sports memorabilia collecting today has gone well beyond just the hobby of the collecting of baseball cards and today it is a full fledged industry on its own accord. Collectors today are not only sports buffs; they are also interested in the investment aspect of their collections. Probably the most famous of all baseball memorabilia collectors, Barry Halper who recently passed away at the age of sixty-six at one time owned over 80,000 baseball related items. He began his lifetime of collecting at the age of eight and collected over thirty thousand baseball cards along with many signed baseballs and other assorted baseball memorabilia. Around twenty percent of his collection is now displayed at the Baseball Hall of Fame with the balance having been sold at auction for approximately twenty-two million dollars after Halper found himself in failing health.

HOW TO CARE FOR SPORTS MEMORABILIA

Posted on February 24th, 2006. About Sports.

HOW TO CARE FOR SPORTS MEMORABILIA

IT’S NOT JUST A HOBBY, IT’S AN INVESTMENT!

Many collectors of sports memorabilia have their collections in theirhomes or offices without really showing regard to the preservation and the protection of the items.

I was watching an old black and white movie recently and the scene was a newspaper guy’s office in the fifties. A visitor walks in and as he chats with the news-guy, he casually picks up a baseball from an eggcup type of stand on his desk and turns it over in his hand and glances at it. I think the conversation went something like this “ Freddy where did you get this, it looks like it’s got Yankee signatures on it?” Freddy catches the ball that the visitor tosses over to him and says, “Yeah I think it’s from the late forties, my Dad had it and I sort of inherited it.” I’m watching and even though it’s a movie I’m saying YIKES, Freddy, put that thing in a proper container, you keep throwing that ball around the office and before you know it, bingo, no signatures left!

WHAT’S AVAILABLE TO PROTECT COLLECTIBLES?

1. If Freddy had that ball in his office today, he could buy an acrylic display case similar to the ones found on www.sportsplayer.net, and he could then show the ball to visitors without fear of harming the signatures or the ball itself.
2. Watch the lighting where you display your collections. If fluorescent lighting is nearby, consider replacing it with regular household lighting as fluorescent lighting has ultra violet rays that may damage your display, especially if it carries an autograph. Natural sunlight is even more likely to harm your display, so be sure to keep your collection as far away from direct sunlight as possible.
3. Store your collections in an area that is as close to normal room temperatures as possible. Have you ever been to a store that sells old books? Notice that smell? Often they will take delivery of books that have been stored away in a box in someone’s dank and dark basement. Smells like mould, right? Humidity kills collections!

If your hobby collection is not quite a big investment yet, it has the possibility in the future of being worth quite a bit of money. Be sure to pay attention to the physical protection of your sports memorabilia. Also, talk to your insurance agent to see if he can offer a rider to you that will cover the loss or damage of your collection.

COLTS OFFENSE vs. BEARS DEFENSE… COULD BE A CLASSIC

Posted on February 23rd, 2006. About Sports.

Have you ever noticed how we tend to make comparisons in pairs?
FOOD
Hot/cold. Salt/pepper. Sweet/sour.
GOOD FITS
Hot-dog/Ballgame. The Beach/Bikinis. Thanksgiving/Turkey
NFL FOOTBALL
Offense/Defense. Manning/Harrison. Urlacher/Brown

There is a saying in golf, you drive for show and you putt for dough!
Stretching that analogy into football lexicon, a good offense is similar to good driving while a good defense is like good putting.

DEFENSE IS SUPPOSED TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS!

This year, the team with the best offense and possibly the best team in the NFL, is the no longer undefeated Indianapolis Colts. They are on track to be the odds on Super Bowl favourites even before the playoffs start. After week 16 Peyton Manning had thrown for 28 touchdowns and they have two receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne each with over 1000 yards receiving. In combination with Edgerin James’s prolific running stats (over 1500 yards after week 16) makes this one of the most efficient offenses in a long while. The defense isn’t too shabby either, definitely improved over last year, and it includes Freeny and Mathis with a total of 22 sacks between them, half of the team’s sack total. But the Colts are mainly about offense with Manning at the helm; at this point the Colts have outscored their opposition by more than two to one!

Da Bears are a different breed of animal altogether. Lovie Smith has built this year’s successes around a potent defense. They have led the league in team defense for most of the season. Comparisons are being made to the 85 Super Bowl Champion Bears. While the Colts can boast of having more of a complete team with good offensive and defensive balance, the Bears are defense first, defense second, defense third, and…well you get the idea! The Bears defense helped the team to a nicely constructed eight game winning streak only to be stopped by the Steelers and the “Bus” in week fourteen. The Urlacher led Bear defense is truly the Monster of the Midway and it is no wonder it reminds their fans of a Ditka kind of team. However, it may be that their downfall will be a lack of any consistent passing offense. There had been cries of “bench Orton” bring on Grossman. My guess then was that the Bears would live and die with Orton as QB as let’s face it, Rex Grossman has not exactly put up Hall of Fame numbers when he has had his chances as a starter. But, Grossman got his chance and has played well enough that Coach Smith has decided that Orton will play the final meaningless game against the Vikes, so this likely means the Bears will go with Grossman as their playoff starter.

A CLASSIC MATCH-UP?

One for the ages? I don’t think it will come down to it, but what an intriguing Super Bowl match-up this would be. The # 1 offense, vs. the #1 defense…it just doesn’t get any better than that.

Defense wins championships, right? Still, if we get this game, I think my money will be on the Colts, it seems like it’s Manning’s year.

The perfect Japanese swords

Posted on February 21st, 2006. About Sports.

Buying the perfect Japanese swords is not an easy thing to do, as there are many Japanese swords to choose from and many things to take into consideration. The first look at the many Japanese swords on the market will make a person dizzy. Which one is the best for me So many Japanese swords attract the eye and so many seem appropriate for the wall at home…Of course the best one will also be the most expensive, but how do you know for sure what is the best choice

Getting to know the market involves reading a lot, documenting about how Japanese swords are made and comparing the merchandise in front of your eyes. This means a lot of information will have to be processed in a short while for your own good. Things can actually get easier if you are paying attention to some aspects like the steel of the Japanese swords, their forging, heat treatment and polish. The Japanese swords can be used for battling purposes or for decorating. Depending on the purpose you are looking to buy Japanese swords, these aspects are more or less important.

The ancient smiths made extraordinary blades for the Japanese swords. This is why the most important aspect when choosing the Japanese swords is their blade. The blades consisted in steel purified by the process of forging and folding. The Japanese swords had their blades beat and purified through a long process that gave them a very high quality. Nowadays technology has progressed to a level where pure steel is no longer obtained through such a difficult process. Swedish Powdered Steel is the new and available to work with pure steel. The Japanese swords (especially when used for battle) have to have a very strong and difficult to break blade. What gives them these properties is the even distribution of carbon in the steel, which doesn’t allow weak spots in the just forged blade.

The forging of Japanese swords makes them authentic, with unique blades made by skilled craftsmen. The forging degree is determined by the smith and by how much he folds and beats the blade of the Japanese swords. The structure gets stronger and the grain finer with every repeated folding. If they are not forged then they are modern Japanese swords that are not one of a kind. In this case they are not an individual expression. They make these kind of Japanese swords for selling purposes to the persons who don’t really care about their authenticity (for buyers that want to decorate their houses or offices).

The heat treatment of Japanese swords also gives them a higher quality making their grain structure finer. The authentic Japanese swords differentiate themselves through a sign left by the heat treatment it is called the Hamon. The changed molecular structure from the heat treatment is visible on the edge of the Japanese swords where the blades have a different color (Pearle). Of course modern manufacturers have thought of a way to give the Japanese swords this look without the heat treatment using a chemical treatment that doesn’t change the molecular structure.

The final touch for the blades was the polish, which used to be made by hand. It took several days or weeks just for one Japanese sword to have its blade polished. Such traditionally polished by hand Japanese swords would cost thousands of dollars nowadays. As the process is no longer practical it is currently done with the help of different polishing instruments. Some buyers look for a mirror-surfaced blade, but the true beauty of the Japanese swords is to be able to see the metal folding pattern and the Hamon on the edge. To buy such Japanese swords (that are fully polished and take a lot of time to finish) will probably cost a lot more than you would have expected. But invest only if you are serious in buying the authentic Japanese swords.

There are more things to admire and appreciate when buying Japanese swords the design and shape, the mountings, the weight balance. You should also be careful that the blades don’t have any cracks and that the sayas fit, the fittings don’t rattle or the wrappings aren’t tight enough.

You could be a simple buyer that doesn’t want anything special or you could be a collector or investor that wants only the best for himself (the authentic Japanese swords), but no matter what you want them for, the Japanese swords are treasured items worth buying and taking care of. Whichever Japanese swords you may choose or consider perfect for you, the spirit of the worrier will always be in their symbol and remind you of true virtues.

Portrait Photography : One of the Greatest Arts

Posted on February 21st, 2006. About Sports.

Before doing any portrait photography there are some very important questions that any photographer should ask himself. What kind of light source it’s going to be used? From what angle the light will fall on the subject? What film, camera and lens are best to use?

If you manage to answer all this questions before taking the photo then you will probably make quite a good portrait photography. But i know that you don’t want a good portrait photography, you want a perfect one. So the best way to achieve this performance is to talk with the client trying to know him, his past, his desires. This way you can create distinctive portraits. If you want a real great portrait then you have to add a bit of the client’s personality in the photo. This works very well especially when you make female portrait photography. You shouldn’t look for a face that is over painted by a makeup artist. Try to surprise something that really represents the subject.

If you are wondering what to talk about with your clients then the answer is anything that will show you something distinctive for that person. Try to look for different face expressions and eye or mouth movement. When you see something beautiful keep it in mind and later capture it in your portraits. Belive me that studying the subject before making the portrait photography is the biggest secret in this art.

Meeting with the client, building rapport, knowing the client, and planning the session are essential elements. So don’t do the final session at the first meeting. After you are sure that you know everything you need to know to make a perfect portrait photography choose the best location and time of day and take the session.

I advice you to always use natural light if it’s possible. Choosing the background it’s also very important too. If the picture is to close then the background looses any meaning, if it’s to far then the background will overwhelm the subject. So try not to merge the subject with the background in an indistinguishable shape.

From my point of view making portrait photography is the greatest art. I belive this because it’s very different from making landscape photography or nature photography. When you make a photo you can make the subject to react to your wills and you really can control the picture.

So, in conclusion when it comes to portrait photography it all depends on how much you want the photo to be perfect and how dedicated you are to the art and the feeling of seeing that your client is really pleased.
