How Menu Changes Can Affect Your Restaurant Business

By: Patricia Farnham

Menu changes can have quite an affect on your restaurant business so you need to be very wise about them. Don't think that you can cut corners on quality and customers won't notice. If you are changing the type of French fries you serve or the salads you make, it better be an improvement. If you are simply trying to cut back on the cost of the items you use it can result in you losing customers.

These types of subtle but effective changes to your menu can really affect the repeat customers you get in the door. You may think you are saving time and money if you switch to instant potatoes. However, you could have just significantly cut down the number of people that will be coming in to dine with you in the future.

You can be sure they are going to share this information with other people they know too. Good food is something everyone is interested in. You may find that improving some of the items you offer on your menu has resulted in quite a significant increase in the number of customers you have coming in.

Most restarts offer a good selection of foods on their menu. If you have particular items that you do get orders for very often, you should consider removing them. Give your customers some choices they will end up being excited about. You can offer some of these items at a discount price initially to see how well they will do. If you find they are hot sellers you can add them to your regular menu.

Prices tend to be a touchy subject in any restaurant. As the cost of the ingredients and supplies you use go up, you will make less profit. There will come a time when you have to increase the prices on your menu. For the most part, your regular customers are still going to come in. Be prepared for some comments about it as well as inquiries.

You do have to be careful with price increases though. I have seen it happen in some restaurants and instead of making money their sales drop. Consumers have a hard time with huge price increases. As a result they are going to avoid eating there for a while. It could be to make a statement or it could be they simply can't afford it.

When you make these types of menu changes, you need to get new ones printed up. It doesn't look very good when items are crossed out, prices are written in, and old items are still on the menu. This can all be very confusing to your guests. Since it does cost money to make your new menus, go over all the possible changes you need to implement so you won't need to redo them in the near future.

Menu chances can either have a positive or a negative effect on your restaurant business. What will take place is up to you. It depends on how you handle some of the issues that are going to come up. You need to consider all of your changes from the customers point of view though, not just your own.
