Dog Success Training Tips

By: Dr. Mayra Alfonso

Many dog owners think that training a dog is a complex matter, and they don't even try to train their dogs. They believe that training dogs is only a thing that experts professional dog trainers can do. Well, they might be right, if they are thinking of those amazing dogs that they see on competitions on TV. Contrary to their belief, training a dog the basics is a really simple task. Once the owner becomes familiar with the dog training success tips, half the battle is won.

What is difficult about training a dog? In reality training a dog does not have to be as difficult as many people think. It is not only the privileged that can train their dogs because they can afford taking their pets to dog training classes. Anybody who is serious about training their dogs can do it. All they need to do is to apply a few dog training success tips.

One of the first tips you need to be familiar with when training your dog is that you need to apply three basic elements to your dog training efforts. These elements are consistency, persistence and patience. Without these three changes are your efforts on training your dog will fail.

Another tip is to make certain that your pet knows that you are the Alpha or the pack leader. When dogs do not recognize their owners as their leader, they will follow their own rules, not their masters' rules. Remember that dogs are pack animals and therefore they are used to follow the leader of the pack, if they do not have a strong leader the thing that makes sense to them is to become their own leader. You know if your puppy considers you his leader if he shows signs of submissions, like for example laying on his back so you can rub his belly.

No dog is perfect, the same way that no owner is perfect, but one thing is certain the more you show your dog the right things to do, the better both of you will be. A puppy that misbehaves does not need to be scolded, hit or yell at, he needs to be shown the right way to do the things you want from him. If you see your flurry friend making a mistake and you wait until a few minutes later to correct him, he will have no idea of why you are correcting him. Remember, dogs have very short attention span and short memory.

One of the dog training success tips that pet owners need to master is to make their best friend wanted to be on their best behavior. But how can the owner accomplish this? Very easily when your pet behaves in a desirable way, encourage that behavior with treats and praises. This is what is called positive reinforcement.

So how long should your training sessions be? The answer is, not long. Your goal is to make the training sessions short and interesting for your pet. This is also an opportunity to bond with your dog, so make it fun and not painful. When the training session is too long the pet will get bored and will lose interest.

Should a dog owner get discouraged if the dog does not behave the way he wants him to at first? Definitively not, this is where patience and consistency comes into play. Don't be discouraged if your pup doesn't listen to you at first, if you persist, in not time your puppy will get it. There are a few benefits of training your own dog: increase your bonding with him, have fun while training him, get a better behaved dog and save money.

These dog training success tips are the basics for dog training. If you as the trainer, owner and master practice patience and caring with your dog, you will have a well behaved dog that you will be very proud to show off. Not only this, the relationship with your dog will improve ten folds.
