Do I really need to wear that pink fluffy dog coat?

By: Iftekh Khan

If you’ve recently bought something wonderful for your pet like a new dog coat, think about what it must have been like in

the past before pet shops and online pet supplies websites selling everything our hearts could desire.

Anyone with a beloved pet will think nothing of lavishing treats and presents on them as well as spending a fortune on only the best pet food. But it hasn’t always been that way. Historically, most dogs and cats survived eating grains, meats, table scraps and homemade food from their owners. It wasn’t until 1860 that the world saw its first food made specifically for dogs.

James Spratt an American electrician, who at the time was living in London, invented the first dog treat after being offered some inedible, discarded ship biscuits for his dog. Spratt decided that his beloved pet was worthy of more than just scraps for meals and the idea was born, dog treats! Spratt developed a carefully compounded preparation of blended wheat meals, vegetables, beetroot and meat which was a far cry from the luxurious food, treats and dog coats we offer to our four legged friends today.

This was the first commercial dog food and was baked on the premises of Walker, Harrison and Garthwaite, a firm which lay claim to have baked the first dog biscuits. Nevertheless, the Spratt distinction places him not only as the initiator of pet foods but as the first pet food entrepreneur to farm out his production. His company flourished and by 1890 he was taken over by a large corporation and production had begun in the United States as well.

In today’s pet supplies market it’s a very different story. We can shop online and purchase anything from pet food, to hamster cages, dog coats and Biorb fish tanks and have it delivered to our doors. There are even some websites such as Pet-Points.com which will actually offer you reward points for shopping with them which you can redeem on future purchases! A far cry from the idea of shocking packages of dog biscuits in grocery stores which were understandably an appalling one to grocers at first!

Ironically, as a result of our love for our pets we have spoiled them with often fattening and unhealthy treats. As a direct result of this, animal health problems are now common place and we’re seeing a trend toward natural, holistic, raw, and yes, homemade, human-quality pet foods – not too different from the type of foods people fed their pets before pet food ever existed.

Conclusion

If you’re going to spoil your pet why not order your pet supplies online. It’s quick, easy and often much more cost effective than purchasing at a store or pet shop. You’ll find that you have a greater choice whether you’re looking for rabbit, ferret or hamster cages, Biorb fish tanks or just plain old pet food. You might even get lucky and find yourself with a free gift for your pet or reward points to redeem on your next purchase.
