Days of Our Lives veteran Drake Hogestyn (John Black) recently concluded his 21-year work on the soap opera, and this came as a shock to both fans and actors of the show, including Deidre Hall, who plays John's now widowed wife, Marlena Evans Black. However, Black's onscreen death has actually paved a way for Marlena to take on a vast selection of storylines, thus reclaiming her spot in the forefront of the daytime drama. Deidre Hall admitted that she wasn't sure about what her character will take on now that her husband is dead, but believes that her storyline will be along the lines of seeking revenge. "I believe I'm playing Jodie Foster, à la The Brave One: I'm out for the man who killed my man," Hall said in a conversation with TV Guide Canada . "Marlena's quietly and fiercely empowered — and since she has nothing to lose, she has enormous strength." The actress adds that her character is now focused on "getting even with Stefano [Joseph Mascolo]" and trying to put an end to the Brady-DiMera feud, which began with Stefano's love for Marlena. "Stefano's the one she's after, and vice versa," the actress continued. "Stefano's a moth to a flame — he can't look away from her. We're going to see an interesting struggle between two people and a fight to the death." In talking about the Emmys, however, the 60-year-old actress said that for her, it winning the prestigious award is an "impossible dream." "It's a numbers game," Hall said about the awards process. "I want the audience to know that we're slighted on Emmy day because the Academy is compromised of actors on each show, and actors on each soap vote for their network." She adds that there is a very slim chance for NBC, as it has only one soap opera, Days of Our Lives, as opposed to other networks with two or more soap operas up their sleeves. Despite that fact, Hall is happy to be playing Marlena on the long-running Days of Our Lives. "I'm still happy where I am. My career on [Days of our Lives] allows me to have chunks of time off, a wonderful life, and an opportunity to play a great character all at the same time," the actress said. "Thanks to [the show], I get to spend time with my friends, family, and children. I have the best of all possible worlds. And I have no need to rock that boat."
