Dating After a Divorce: A 'How To' Guide

By: Pam Baldwin

Dating after a divorce can be scary. Often divorcees cringe at the idea of getting back into the dating game. Their reasons vary. I've heard some say that they feel out of practice and don't know what to do or say on a date because it's been so long. Others complain that they don't know how to meet people.

Usually the source of this anxiety is simply insecurity. It's only natural that a person be hesitant to put their heart on the line after being burned by an ex-partner. It's also understandable if your confidence in yourself has been shaken following a divorce.

While this is a normal feeling to have, don't let it get the best of you! It's perfectly fine to feel nervous, but it is not okay to let your nerves get the best of you! Remember that everybody is a little nervous about going on a first date with someone new, so you're not alone.

Make sure you are ready to date before you put yourself out there. A divorce can be emotionally exhausting, so evaluate your priorities and be sure that you're ready to take on a new relationship. At the same time, don't wait too long - sometimes the longer you remain single, the harder it is to re-accustom yourself to the world of dating.

Another excuse I often hear is that people don't know where to go to meet potential partners. Sometimes they feel like they're too old for the bar scene, and worry that everybody in their social circle is already taken. However, the good news is that there are ways around this!

One such alternative is to join an internet dating web site. The popularity of these kinds of web sites has exploded in recent years, and with good reason. They're a much more efficient way of finding somebody who shares common interests and goals with you. A potential life partner is only a click away!

There are a number of quality web sites out there, such as match.com. It's really easy to get set up; all you do is fill out a profile, upload a photograph or two, and then you're free to browse others' profiles and contact anyone of interest. You have nothing to lose by trying it, and everything to gain!

Getting back into dating after a divorce doesn't need to be agonizing. It should be a fun and exciting time in your life! Think of it as an opportunity to make a fresh start, and meet new people with whom you share common interests. The worst case scenario is that you'll make a new friend or two!
