Are Vending Machines To Blame For People Being Overweight?

By: Robert Farnham

Are vending machines to blame for people being overweight? The answer to that question depends on who you ask. There are some in our society that tend to blame others for their choices. Fast food locations have been sued for people gaining weight and so it is just a matter of time before the owner's of vending machines find themselves in the same predicament.

The bottom line though is that no one has to spend their money in a vending machine. They can bring along their own drinks and snacks to ensure they get something healthy. People just like the fact that they don't have to carry items around. They can also get a cold drink from a vending machine when they want to.

Yet due to this high demand for them that is what vendors are going to continue stocking. It makes no sense for them to fill a vending machine up with items people aren't going to buy. The fact that some people buy these unhealthy items from vending machines though day after day is their own choice. They need to make some changes to their mindset about food.

Many schools have been removing vending machines though due to complaints by parents and community members. They feel that if the students don't have access to the junk food in them they will eat a healthy lunch. Yet may students bring junk food and pop to school in their own lunches. Older students go out and get fast food for their lunch hour.

Other schools have compromised and they only allows students to have access to them before and after school. This doesn't make the owners of the vending machines very happy though. They are certainly missing out on a large volume of sales during the course of the day. Students used to buy snacks and drinks all day long between classes.

As a result some owners are having to move their vending machines so they can make enough money. What was once a very good location has turned out to be one that doesn't do very well anymore. Of course if they have contracts in place they may have to let the vending machine take a loss until it ends.

Offering some healthier drinks and snacks is one way that vending machine owners are working on the issue as well. They want to make sure people don't feel pushed into buying sugary snacks or drinks. They will if there is nothing else that fits into their diet so they don't want to back them into such a corner.

There really isn't any connection between heavy individuals and the availability of vending machines though. The problem is that society needs to put more of a focus on a healthy overall diet. Fingers need to stop being pointed and their needs to be responsibility in the homes. Choosing a healthy lifestyle with healthy foods and plenty of exercise is a personal choice.
